How to Bait and Use a Minnow Trap

From freem

Using a minnow trap is an effective way to catch live bait for fishing. Here are the steps to bait and use a minnow trap:

1. Choose the right trap: Select a minnow trap that is appropriate for the body of water you plan to fish in. Traps come in different sizes and shapes, so make sure you choose one that is appropriate for the type of fish you want to catch.

2. Bait the trap: Place some bait in the trap to attract the minnows. Minnows are attracted to things like bread, cornmeal, dog food, and bacon. Place the bait in the middle of the trap, making sure it is secured and won't fall out.

3. Set the trap: Place the trap in the water in a location where minnows are known to be present. Make sure the trap is secure and won't drift away with the current. You can tie the trap to a dock or use a weight to keep it in place.

4. Check the trap: Check the trap periodically to see if any minnows have been caught. You can check the trap every hour or so. If you catch some minnows, remove them from the trap and replace the bait.

5. Store the minnows: Once you have caught some minnows, store them in a bait bucket or live well with aerated water. Make sure you don't overcrowd the container as this can harm the minnows.

6. Use the minnows: Use the live minnows as bait for fishing. You can hook the minnows through the back or the lips, depending on the type of fish you are trying to catch.

7. Release unused minnows: If you have any unused minnows at the end of the fishing trip, release them back into the water. This will help maintain the ecosystem and ensure a healthy population of bait fish for future fishing trips.

Remember to follow local fishing regulations and obtain the necessary permits before using a minnow trap.
