How to Approach and Release a Skunk from a Live Trap

From freem

Approaching and releasing a skunk from a live trap can be a tricky task, as skunks are known for their ability to spray a strong-smelling liquid when they feel threatened. Here are some steps you can follow to safely approach and release a skunk from a live trap:

1. Wear protective clothing: It's important to wear protective clothing such as gloves, long sleeves, and pants to protect yourself from potential bites or scratches. You may also want to wear eye protection to shield your eyes from any spray.

2. Approach the trap slowly and calmly: Approach the trap slowly and calmly, avoiding sudden movements or loud noises that could startle the skunk. Speak softly to the skunk in a reassuring tone to let it know you are there.

3. Cover the trap with a blanket: Before releasing the skunk, you may want to cover the trap with a blanket or towel to help calm the skunk and reduce its stress level.

4. Open the trap from a safe distance: Open the trap door from a safe distance using a long stick or pole. Be sure to stand to the side of the trap, rather than in front of it, to avoid being sprayed.

5. Retreat slowly: Once you have opened the trap, retreat slowly to a safe distance and give the skunk time to exit the trap on its own. Skunks are generally docile animals and will not attack unless they feel threatened.

6. Wait for the skunk to leave: Skunks are nocturnal animals and may not want to leave the trap during the daytime. If the skunk does not leave the trap within a reasonable amount of time, you may need to cover the trap again and wait until after dark to release it.

Remember to always approach and release a skunk from a live trap with caution and care to avoid injuring the animal or yourself.
