How to Apply for a Social Security Number for a Baby

From freem

If you have recently had a baby, one of the important things you'll need to do is apply for a Social Security number (SSN) for your child. Here are the steps to follow:

1. Gather the required documents: To apply for a Social Security number for your baby, you will need to provide the following documents:

- Baby's birth certificate: You must have an original or certified copy of your baby's birth certificate. The certificate must show the baby's full name, date of birth, and place of birth.

- Parents' identification: You will need to provide original documents showing both parents' identification, such as a driver's license, passport, or state ID.

2. Complete the application: You can apply for a Social Security number for your baby by completing Form SS-5, which is available on the Social Security Administration (SSA) website. You can also obtain a paper copy of the form by visiting a local SSA office.

3. Submit the application: You can submit the completed application and required documents in person at a local Social Security office or by mail to the address provided on the form.

4. Wait for the Social Security card: The SSA will process your application and send your baby's Social Security card to you by mail. It can take up to 12 weeks to receive the card, but the process is usually faster if you apply for the number at the hospital when your baby is born.

Note that you do not need to apply for a Social Security number for your baby before you leave the hospital. In fact, many hospitals now offer to start the application process for you before you even leave the hospital. However, you should apply for a Social Security number for your baby as soon as possible to avoid any delays in receiving benefits or other important services that may require the number.
