How to Age Copper

From freem

Aging copper is a popular technique used in various DIY projects and crafts, as it can give copper items a beautiful, rustic look. Here's a simple method for aging copper:

Materials: - Copper item - Salt - Ammonia - Spray bottle - Rubber gloves - Safety glasses - Clean cloth

Instructions:

1. Begin by cleaning the copper item with soap and water to remove any dirt or grease.

2. Put on rubber gloves and safety glasses to protect your skin and eyes.

3. In a well-ventilated area, mix together a solution of salt and ammonia in a spray bottle. The ratio of salt to ammonia can vary depending on how quickly you want the copper to age. A good starting point is 1 part salt to 3 parts ammonia.

4. Shake the spray bottle to mix the solution thoroughly.

5. Spray the copper item generously with the solution.

6. Let the solution sit on the copper for several hours or overnight. During this time, the copper will start to develop a green or blue patina.

7. After the desired amount of time has passed, use a clean cloth to wipe away any excess solution.

8. Rinse the copper item with water to remove any remaining solution.

9. Let the copper item dry completely.

10. If desired, you can apply a coat of clear sealant to protect the patina and prevent further aging.

Note: The fumes from ammonia can be strong and irritating, so make sure you work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gear. Additionally, this method is best used on solid copper items and may not work as well on copper-plated items.
