Back up or reverse on a horse is a fundamental maneuver that every rider should learn. It is a useful skill that can help you in various situations, such as getting out of tight spaces or correcting a mistake. Here are the steps to back up on a horse:

1. Start by establishing a good communication system with your horse. Make sure your horse responds well to your aids, especially to the rein and leg aids.

2. Begin by stopping your horse and ensuring that he is standing square and balanced.

3. Next, ask your horse to shift his weight to his hindquarters by using your leg aids. You can do this by squeezing your legs gently and applying pressure on the reins.

4. Once your horse has shifted his weight, gently ask him to take a step backward by applying slight pressure on the reins. Your horse should move backward with his front legs first, followed by his hind legs.

5. As soon as your horse starts to move backward, release the pressure on the reins and praise him for his effort.

6. Repeat the steps until your horse is comfortable with the maneuver.

7. Remember to keep your horse's head and neck straight while backing up. Do not let him turn his head or neck to either side, as this can cause him to lose balance.

8. Also, keep your body upright and relaxed, and sit deep in the saddle to help maintain your balance and provide support to your horse.

9. Practice backing up in a straight line before attempting to back up on a curve or in a circle.

10. Finally, be patient and consistent. Learning how to back up on a horse takes time and practice, so don't get discouraged if it takes a while for your horse to master the maneuver.
