How to Be a CNA in North Carolina

To become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in North Carolina, you must meet the following requirements:

1. Meet the Eligibility Criteria: You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

2. Complete a State-Approved Training Program: You must complete a state-approved CNA training program. This program should include both classroom instruction and clinical training. The North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation maintains a list of approved programs on their website.

3. Pass the Competency Exam: After completing the training program, you must pass the CNA competency exam. The exam consists of two parts: a written exam and a skills demonstration. The exam is administered by Pearson VUE.

5. Pass a Background Check: You must pass a criminal background check before you can be certified as a CNA in North Carolina.

6. Maintain Certification: CNAs in North Carolina must renew their certification every two years. You must complete at least eight hours of continuing education during each two-year certification period to renew your certification.
