If you encounter a coyote while outdoors, here are some tips on how to act: 1. Remain calm and avoid panicking. Coyotes are generally more afraid of humans than we are of them, and they will often avoid confrontations if given the chance. 2. Do not approach the coyote, and give it plenty of space. Coyotes are wild animals and may become aggressive if they feel threatened. 3. Make yourself look as big and loud as possible. Wave your arms, clap your hands, and shout to try and scare the coyote away. 4. If you have a pet with you, keep it on a leash. Coyotes may see small pets as prey and try to attack them. 5. Back away slowly and do not turn your back on the coyote. Keep an eye on it as you leave the area. 6. If the coyote continues to follow you or act aggressively, try to scare it away with a loud whistle, air horn, or other loud noise. If necessary, seek shelter in a nearby building or climb a tree. Remember, coyotes are wild animals and should be treated with caution and respect. If you feel threatened or encounter an aggressive coyote, contact your local animal control agency for assistance.
